Dear pas,

Six months ago, I decided to give my life to Christ, but this has not been without its challenges, especially in my relationship. As a new Christian, I am struggling to stay on the straight and narrow path while trying to maintain a healthy relationship with my boyfriend like we used to have. I have set boundaries, but I often end up breaking them for fear that he will find someone else to do the things that I no longer do. I have also asked him to come to church with me, but he refuses. I don’t want to lose him, but I also want to do what is right in the eyes of God. What should I do?

Pastors response:

A healthy relationship motivates you to change bad habits, especially those that are not pleasing to God. God can only help us change for the better if we ask him to apply the Bible in our lives. As a new convert, I understand the situation that you are faced with, but you cannot direct your relationship to the spiritual level if you have not reached it personally yet. Before imposing this goal on the relationship, strengthen your own faith and relationship with God.

He can only work in your relationship if you let him work in your life first.in the bible, it teaches us that God is a jealous God and you must love him before you love your partner. You must also fear the Lord. Genesis 39, tells us the story of Joseph the dreamer, who was tempted by his master's wife, and he refused her not because he feared her husband but because he did not want to sin against God.

If you love God, you would fear to do anything that displeases him. Finally, we know that, as Christians, we’re being renewed by the Holy Spirit each day we walk with Jesus. Colossians 3:10 tells us that our new self is being renewed day by day after the image of its creator.

God is very clear about people who profess to be Christians yet live a lifestyle that is of the world; sexual immorality included. This can be reviewed in 1 Corinthians Chapter 6. God expects us to live above and beyond the philosophies and lifestyles of the unsaved. Have left Christianity altogether.
